Controlling internet communications. [Govt move]

•October 29, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Who will control Internet, Your govt?
Some time ago, while people were fully concentrated on the heated battle for the US primaries campaigns,

The US governement didn’t miss the opportunity to pass a bill to control every email or other digital data sent from or to the US.

This is a quite an outrageous measure but obviously our usual information channels failed once again to cover properly this very serious topic.

Early this month of october, the UK government said they are planning the same move as well.

Controlling every message Sent on social Networking websites, traditional emails and phone communication. Needless to cite them all but anyone with a basic common sense should feel concerned about these plans.

Technology will have probably its response to such intelectually advanced idiocies.

We have seen that before,

Wasn’t Peer to peer declared illegal in the past?

Technology has overcome this and responded, as a result we saw the birh of a new kind of a revolutionary technology:

Bittorrent.

They are thousands of them like that, I was wondering what could technology do about this pure menace of our freedoms?

This evening while checking my rss feeds, i saw that a coalition of hope is born.

The initiative comes from “Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft band together to protect human rights online”.

I’m more than delighted, I was not expecting these companies who actually hosts more than 95% of our virtual lives making such a move. I was instead expecting this reaction to be coming from digital freedom fighters and individual or organized hackers as we have seen in the past.

Thank you the Big ones!

•September 29, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Over the week end I spend some time looking for furnitures and decorative stuffs for a home I don’t have.

I have been impressed by the quality of a “new” shopping search engine:

Twenga.co.uk

shopaholics will find it Probably much better than google.

Myself i reckon that i spent quite some time using it,and the result is that I will save quite lot of money buying a bed and my decorative things.

This is a man’s talk:)

BIG Sony Bravia HD ready TV Screen

•March 26, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Back from the easter bank holiday break.

Who would predict that Jesus’ crucifixion and resurection thousands years ago, would be instrumentalised by marketing people as a major economic opportunity to boost sales for their own profit?

Maybe capitalism fathers would. But they were  even not in god’s project. This blasphematory fact, that after all is not at all seen as a sin by the biblical religions fathers, has its good effect i reckon.

I have purchashed a huge flat TV screen that is now hung in my room. Quite unusual would say some of those who know me for ever; I’ve never had a TV in my life, except the one i had at my first year at university.(quickly sold to friends.)

My favorite image display will probably include this Year Formula one, some cartoon

but these available digital channels are quite deceiving.

More importantly, I’m able to perform malicious code Analysis in this impressive screen,

Can you imagine the size of a disassembled viral code? for the first time i’m starting to think

that assembly code is much more artistic than just a bunch of dumped data on the screen.

May I remind you not to be jealous. Spending too much on unecessary items is a form of waste,

And as much as i remember, wasting resources is a sin, from a religious point of view.

So maybe you need to wait till the next easter sales? Till then I will enjoy this cute little sin.

By the way, it was fairly cheap product.

Secure Insecure Security

Not long than last friday, while driving back home from work,

we were wondering with a colleague : after all, who are these guys behind such sophisticated attacks such as storm worms, strations etc…

It is clear that the power of these creatures and their profesionalism are fa from being originated by students amateur or traditional virus writers.

The most intriguing thing is how are recruited these guys?

Obviousply you don’t send your CV as virus writer or something similar.

At least I have not yet met something like “A virus creation company seeks malware writer, a very exciting position to get with very rewarding package!..”, or maybe monster and other are filtring them ?

well.. you have to read the following story to have a clue of what is really going on.

Excerpt:

09:44:07 10.11.2007 added by nowayout

An American computer security consultant on Friday admitted using massive botnets to illegally install software on at least 250,000 machines and steal online banking identities of Windows users by evesdropping on them while they made financial transactions.

John Kenneth Schiefer, 26, of Los Angeles, pleaded guilty to four felonies, including accessing protected computers to conduct fraud, disclosing illegally intercepted electronic communications, wire fraud and bank fraud. He faces a maximum sentence of 60 years in federal prison and a fine of $1.75m, according to documents filed Friday in federal court.

Schiefer, who went by names such as “Acid” and “Acidstorm,” has long been a fixture in underground hacking circles. He sometimes adorned his instant message handles with phrases such as “remember the name or feel the pain” and “crime pays, and it also has an excellent benefits package.” He was employed at a Los Angeles-based security firm known as 3G Communications, where he sometimes carried out his crimes, according to court documents.

The plea agreement caps an investigation involving the FBI that began in 2005, said Assistant US Attorney Mark Krause. He declined to say if charges would be filed against several conspirators mentioned in court documents, who went by names including “revolt,” “Harr0,” “butthead,” “pr1me” and “dynamic”. The case is the first time a crime related to botnets has been charged under US wiretap statutes.

Schiefer, referred questions to his attorney, who was out of town and didn’t immediately return a phone call.

According to prosecutors, Schiefer and several accomplices developed malware they dubbed “spybot” that made vulnerable Windows machines part of botnet. They controlled the zombies using servers from various hosting companies, herding as many as 250,000 machines at a time. Schiefer controlled the machines using computers at his home and place of employment.

The malware contained a sniffing feature that siphoned PayPal credentials from Protected Store, a section of Windows that stores passwords users have opted to have saved. Although Pstore, as the Windows feature is often called, encrypts the information before storing it, Schiefer’s malware was able to read it, presumably by escalating its Windows privileges.

It’s scary isn’t it? I have a kind of smile in my face but not for so long i’m afraid..probably thousands of malcodes to be detected again.

songe et esprit

•July 10, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Phydra Python Project: PE binary analyser

•June 6, 2007 • 1 Comment

Phydra is a tool that analyses a windows binary file given as asgument and print it’s srtucture in the screen. This tool is particularly useful when working with windows executable files, for patching, correcting or other purposes.

This is an open source project so feel free to use and distribute it as long as you respect the licence and leave the credit part in the header untouched.

Phydra uses the pefile module profided by Ero Carrera. A great work!

Click in the link below to download Phydra source code.

You dont need to be in windows to use it. Phydra is working perfectly under linux and Unix systems(at least in my freeBSD :) ) :
